Sounding Decolonial Futures: Decentering Ethnomusicology's Colonialist Legacies

Zeisberg 21 "Bear Dance"

The information about "Bear Dance" is very partial. It is not clear whether it, too, is linked to the Indian Fair in October 1938 or what provided inspiration for this arrangement. The arrangement is marked with narrative elements: I imagine a colonialist play, someone playing piano accompanying a choreographed piece with someone in costume, possible kids or amateur theater. "A bear comes out," reads the first part of narration. "Hunting chestnuts in the leaves; scratching faster and faster. Winds a hunter, stops, retreats! (Dancers dance backward.) Bears climbs a tree, indicated by upward arm motion etc."
