Sounding Decolonial Futures: Decentering Ethnomusicology's Colonialist Legacies

Zeisberg 16 “Game Song” (Vancouver’s Island)

Zeisberg has kept the correct title, complete with what may appear to contemporary readers as a grammatical mistake identifying what we know as "Vancouver Island." However, "Vancouver's Island" was one part of its colonial name.

In the original for this arrangement, attributed in Fletcher as "Transcribed and Harmonized by Prof. J.C. Fillmore," Zeisberg does virtually nothing, with the exception of moving the melody up one octave for two measures at the end. The accompaniment in the bass keeps the same rhythm but adjusts the spelling of the chords a little. In other words, the re-arrangement does minimal work.
