After the Restoration, King Louis XVIII conferred upon Oberlin the highest honor, the Cross of the Legion of Honor, in 1819, in recognition of his work establishing the French language in his parish and other works that contribution to the nationhood of France. This commemorative French medallion, struck not long after his death in 1826, features a bust of Oberlin in relief on the front, and the Cross of the Legion of Honor, oak garlands, and "The memory of the righteous is a blessing" on the reverse.
