Oberlin's Namesake: John Frederick Oberlin (1740-1826)

The Ban de la Roche, Alsace, France

Oberlin's parish comprised five remote villages in the Ban de la Roche near the Vosges Mountains in Alsace, France. Until Oberlin initiated road building there were no roads connecting the villages to the outside world. In the 19th and 20th centuries, people drawn to Oberlin and his story visited the region and made drawings, lithographs, photographs and paintings of Oberlin's churches, his gravesite, the villages, and the landscape.
