Oberlin's Namesake: John Frederick Oberlin (1740-1826)

19th century lithographs of the Ban de la Roche

Until photography's invention in 1839 and for the many years before reprography enabled photographic reproduction in the 1880s, lithographs or engravings from drawings and paintings, or drawn directly on lithographic stone were the most common form of visual representation in multiples. Explore these book illustrations by Charles Joseph Hullmandel, and large format lithographs by Théodore Müller of the Ban de la Roche in Alsace, dating from the years immediately following Oberlin's death in 1826.
