From 1949 through the 1990s, local artist Shikoku Gorō advanced a bold and democratic vision for cultural life by bringing poetry to the streets & mobilizing visual arts to represent the vitality, beauty, and complexity of Hiroshima. The exhibit explores a set of influential books, along with other examples of socially committed art. Memorial Mound for the Dead

Shikoku recalls that “One day, there was a 10-meter long white cloth draped on the low fence at the front of the mound. Written in large letters were the words ‘We dedicate ourselves to building a peaceful and just world without war” and the signatures of several hundred committed elementary school students who had made the journey all the way from Hirakata [near Osaka].”
