Sounding Decolonial Futures: Decentering Ethnomusicology's Colonialist Legacies

Individual: Mary Hemenway

Mary Hemenway (1820-1894) was an American philanthropist, most notable for funding the Hemenway Southwestern Archaeological Expedition. Born to wealthy shipping merchant Thomas Tileston, she married another wealthy merchant in Boston but only became involved in philanthropy after the death of her eldest daughter in 1856. In addition to funding the expedition in its entirety, Hemenway’s efforts also included donating to Hampton and Tuskegee universities, founding the first kitchens in public schools, and establishing the Boston Normal School of Gymnastics.
