E. Lawrence to lead what became known as the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks during World War I. The British had promised Faisal that he would be king of the Arabs in Damascus and he arrived at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference as the chief Arab spokesman. His reign in Damascus lasted only a few months, until France invaded from Lebanon. In 1921 he became King of Iraq with British support.plain2021-06-25T15:32:07+00:0029 June 19193 3/8 x 5 1/2 in.Oberlin College ArchivesphotographRG 2/6 Henry Churchill King Papers, Oberlin College ArchivesThe photographs and documents relating to the King-Crane Commission are provided by the Oberlin College Archives for research and educational use only.
