Title/Subject: Charles Grandison Finney (American, 1792-1875)
Charles Grandison Finney was the foremost evangelical preacher in America during the Second Great Awakening beginning in the 1820s. In 1835 he was appointed head of Oberlin's Theological Seminary, and served as the second president of Oberlin College from 1851-1865. Simultaneously he served as pastor (1837-72) at First Congregational Church in Oberlin. Before and during his time at Oberlin he traveled in New York and the Midwest to preach in the tent he took with him. He also traveled to England with his wife in 1849-50 and 1859-60, carrying on his immensely successful evangelistic work.

The photographic portrait (right) of Charles G. Finney and his wife Elizabeth was taken during their first trip to England in 1849-50. The painting on porcelain and another of his wife were created by British painter Stephen Chesters in 1862, likely from photographs made in 1859-60 while the pair were again in England.
Finney is captured in Chesters' portrait with the intense, penetrating gaze he was known to fix on those who heard him preach. The two portraits on porcelain were given to the College by a donor in England.
